Our Story
In 2017, Lisa Manaigre and Priscilla Sternat-McIvor co-founded Sternat Manaigre Law Corporation — Manitoba's first Aboriginal-owned law practice. The firm has since grown to a team of lawyers specializing in family and collaborative law.
Priscilla Sternat-McIvor knew she wanted to be a lawyer from childhood. Raised in Winnipeg but spending weekends and summers at the Sandy Bay First Nation, she couldn't help noticing the sharp contrasts between the city and her First Nations community. When her grandfather asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, her answer was always the same: “I wanted to be a lawyer. I told him I wanted to fix the roads in Sandy Bay.”
That childhood dream came true when she became a lawyer in 2002. After articling with the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and working at a pair of Winnipeg law firms, she called Lisa Manaigre to talk about striking out on their own.
Lisa Manaigre, a Métis lawyer, had been motivated by a different but equally personal experience — the painful breakup of her parents when she was in high school. “I saw the impact that the court process had on our family, and I thought, ‘There's got to be a better way,’” she says. It turned out she had already developed a business plan for her own practice.
Together, they built a firm grounded in compassion, cultural sensitivity, and a genuine belief that there is a better way to resolve family matters.
